Two steel window quotations can differ by 30% and both be "fair" — because they are not quoting the same thing. Before comparing prices, make the quotations comparable.
1. Put the specification side by side
- Sheet thickness in mm (1.2 mm and 1.6 mm look the same in a photo).
- Zinc coating in GSM — Z120, Z275, or plain mild steel.
- Shutter section, grill section and grill spacing.
- Hinges, handles and bolts — SS or plated?
2. Check what is included
Glass, painting, fixing at site, transport and GST are the usual hidden differences. Ask each supplier to state each one as included or excluded, in writing.
3. Compare window by window, not by a rate
A single rate hides what each window actually contains — the number of shutters, the grill, the steel and the hardware. Ask for the price of each window and frame together with its specification, and compare those.
4. GST and the bill
A proper quotation shows the price before GST, the GST (18% on steel windows and frames) and the total — and you should get a GST tax invoice.
5. Drawings and sizes
Ask for a drawing of each opening with the size, number of shutters, hinge side and grill. Mistakes found on paper cost nothing; mistakes found at site cost days.
6. Payment terms and warranty
Compare the advance asked, the delivery schedule (door frames first) and the warranty — what is covered, for how long, and how service is arranged.
